Equity and Beauty requirements are unique to the Living Building Challenge. The Equity Petal focuses on creating a built environment that upholds the dignity of all members of society, regardless of their physical abilities or economic situations. The Imperatives cover a range of issues, including accessibility, rights to natural systems, social investment, and protecting individuals from the negative impacts caused by adjacent properties.
The Living Building Challenge recognizes the need for beauty as a core requirement of life in the places in which we live, work, play, learn, and worship. LBC projects are meant to inspire others within a region and community, extending the concept of beauty. Part of that inspiration comes from active efforts to educate others about the decisions made for the project and its aspirations, motivations, and design.
