FLY-BYS; Detailing of Extended Planar Elements in Curtain Wall

Abstract:
Many architects wish to express a planar quality in their façade designs.  This expression results in wall assemblies that extend past the corner and appear to float over the building volume behind.  While aesthetically exciting, this motif creates numerous challenges for control of heat, air and moisture.  This presentation will explore several methods to maintain the design intent and deliver performance.  Several case studies with both unitized and stick built systems will be presented.  The presentation will focus on detailing, mockups, testing and construction.  

Learning Objectives:
1.    Identify the potential enclosure problems inherent with a fly-by including thermal bridging, air infiltration, water leaks, and condensation.
2.    Understand the principles behind the various methods of structural support of a fly-by, either concealed in the curtain wall, independently separated, or a blended solution.
3.    Analyze details for fly-bys from DD/construction documentation phase through shop drawings and construction.
4.    Compare the pros and cons of fly-bys constructed with unitized curtain wall versus those constructed with stick-built curtainwall and understand the detailing differences.

Presenter’s Short Bio:
David Altenhofen AIA is East Coast Director of The Facade Group, a building enclosure consulting firm in Portland Oregon and Philadelphia Pennsylvania. He has extensive experience with aluminum curtain walls, windows, glazing, skylights, and other building enclosure systems anchored in the principles of building science, sustainability and real world construction.  With nearly 40 years of practice Dave has worked on nearly every project type and size including many high-rise curtain wall projects. Rounding out his experience, David has been a developer, a licensed general contractor.  David is active in the architectural community at several levels, focusing primarily on reinforcing the architect’s role in building science and tectonic integrated design.  He worked with Wagdy Anis and Richard Keleher in the formation of the Building Enclosure Councils, was chair of BEC National and founded BEC Philly shortly after the formation of BEC Boston.
