ABOUT ABOUT

Abstract: Now more than ever, architects must be keenly aware of the demands of the building enclosure and how to properly integrate these complex considerations into the design process. This makes the design and procurement of the building envelope a highly technical and complex process that places ever increasing demands upon today’s architectural practice. It is crucial that architects develop an understanding of the critical points in the process where decisions must be made and how these decisions effect the performance of the building enclosure.
The goal of this session is to provide attendees with a basic understanding of the critical decision process that must be made regarding the building enclosure as well as gain an understanding how these decisions may have a profound effect upon future design decisions including building performance. Several case studies will be reviewed of building performance issues and solutions will also be presented. Throughout the session, we will highlight technologies that can assist architects to address proper building enclosure and to ensure high performance design.

Learning Objectives:
• Gain a greater understanding of how to properly integrate basic principles of building enclosure into the design process.
• Highlight what decisions must be made during each phase of the design in order to deliver a successful project.
• Understand and identify the common mistakes or pitfalls that occur in the design phase that often lead to unintended and costly issues that must be addressed during the construction phase of the project.
• How to properly integrate the owners project requirement into the design process in order to provide successful outcomes and satisfied clients.
• Be able to create a "toolkit" for use in your daily practice that will lead to a better quality assurance process, a greater emphasis on proper building enclosure, and less issues during the construction phase.

Speaker Bio:
Joe DeAngelis, AIA, LEED AP, is a Principal with TBS Services, a specialized architectural firm that concentrates on building enclosures. He has over 20 years of experience in the design and construction industry and focuses on glazing systems, cladding, roofing and waterproofing systems. He is co-chair of the Philadelphia BEC and has presented frequently on various building enclosure topics.

Cheryl Smith, AIA, LEED AP, is a Principal with Cope Linder Architects, A NELSON Brand. Cheryl is a national leader in building envelope technology and directs some of the firm’s technical aspects of the practice from code to constructability reviews to complex building envelope performance coordination. Cheryl has over 30 years of design and construction experience in hospitality, multi-family, mixed-use, and retail projects.
