ABOUT ABOUT

Please plan to join the Housing Committee as we welcome Tya Winn who will talk about her research project "Public Architecture for Public Good."

As the 2016 Stewardson Keefe Lebrun Travel Grant recipient, Tya Winn traveled to 10 international cities observing public and social housing. Her research project “Public Architecture for Pubic Good” set out to understand the variations in public housing and the affect different political structures or treatment of public housing had on quality of life for end users. Juxtaposed against recent US regulations aiming to decentralize poverty and mitigate the ills that were the unintended result of the modern housing tower and current management of public housing authorities nationwide- many foreign countries are using design as a tool to improve living conditions and increase resident satisfaction.

Case studies will be reviewed from eight countries examining different approaches to public and social housing examining location, urban siting, complex design and upkeep, and onsite amenities. Presentation will highlight the design innovation occurring in some countries through the use of prominent design firms and architects. Examining the relationship between affordability and government intervention, examples will cover different public private partnership in development. Comparisons will be made between the US model and others from Asia, Europe, Africa, and Mexico.
