Architects have an important role to play in addressing the climate crisis. In Philadelphia, buildings alone contribute to more than 70% of the city’s greenhouse gas emissions. In Part 3 of the 2030 Working Group, we will focus
on leveraging environmental design analysis to simulate building performance and improve building design, paving the road to net zero in 2030.
Learning Objectives for this session include:
1. Use an understanding of the daily and seasonal movement of the sun to make better informed early design decisions.
2. Learn how building massing and orientation studies can impact solar access and optimize solar heat loads.
3. Learn how shading devices are used to balance daylight with heat gain/loss.
4. Identify different tools for modelling solar energy and light availability.
