ABOUT ABOUT

The Building Enclosure Council (BEC) of Philadelphia invites all disciplines in the AEC Community to attend our next presentation as we  welcome Dr. John Straube. He is on the leading edge of understanding moisture and energy-related building performance as well as the measurement, modeling, and testing procedures of buildings and their components.

Continuous exterior insulation is an important option for dealing with thermal bridging. But how do you do it right? This seminar with Dr. John Straube will review the functions of the building enclosure and then focus on the practical and technical requirements for achieving a high-performance enclosure with continuous insulation. Strategies to construct highly insulated wall assemblies and minimize thermal bridging will be presented, including an in-depth look at cladding attachment strategies.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand the functional layers of a building enclosure

2. Identify the pros and cons of exterior insulation

3. Understand how thermal bridging occurs and recognize the relative significance of different thermal bridges

4. Compare different strategies for attaching cladding through exterior insulation in terms of thermal performance and ease of installation.

Dr. Straube is a specialist building scientist and engineer who has been deeply involved in the areas of building enclosure design, moisture physics, and whole building performance as a consultant, researcher, and educator. He is Principal, and Senior Building Science Specialist, at RDH Building Science, Inc., and Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo, and Author of several High Performance Building Enclosure and Building Science books. We hope that you will plan to attend this awesome presentation! This event is free; the lunch is generously sponsored by Roxul, USA!

BEC is a multi-dicipline joint committee between AIA & NIBS; it focuses on all aspects the performance of the building enclosure.
